Flowers for good luck

In amongst the hubbub at Camps Drift before the start of The Unlimited Dusi canoe marathon, a decade old ritual will play itself out largely unnoticed by the thousands gathered on the banks of the uMsundusi river, but of huge significance to a number of participants.

Sheila Pearce, the widow of Dusi legend Ernie Pearce, is always invited as a VIP guest to witness the start of the race from the balcony at Natal Canoe Club. At regular intervals paddlers will discreetly approach her and offer her flowers.
