GRADE 1 EASY Small rapids, waves regular and low.
Correct course easy to find.
GRADE 2 MEDIUM Fairly frequent rapids, regular waves, easy eddies.
Course generally easy to recognise
GRADE 3 DIFFICULT Rapids numerous, with fairly high irregular waves, broken water, eddies and whirlpools.
Course not always easily recognisable.
GRADE 4 VERY DIFFICULT Long rapid stretches with high irregular waves, difficult broken water, eddies and whirlpools.
Course often difficult to recognise. Inspection from bank nearly always necessary.
GRADE 5 EXCEEDINGLY
DIFFICULT
Long unbroken stretches of rapids with difficult and completely broken stretches of water, submerged rocks, very difficult whirlpools and very fast eddies.
Previous inspection absolutely essential.
GRADE 6 ABSOLUTE LIMIT All previously mentioned difficulties increased to the limit of practicability.
Cannot be attempted without  risk to life.
